Electronic Cannabis Oil Vaporizers as a Source of Toxic Metals

Heavy metal contamination is an issue in all areas of the cannabis industry today. Electronic cannabis oil vaporizer has been booming in the past three years and becomes the second largest product category of legal cannabis. Vaporizer cartridges can be a relative source of toxic metals, such as As, Cd, Hg and Pb. Metal concentration in cannabis oil can be increased after it is added to cartridge and brought into contact with the heating coil and wick. The goal of this study is to evaluate the possibility of the transfer of metals from the heating coil and wick to the cannabis oil in the vaporizer cartridges and the generated aerosol. In this research, toxic metal analysis of heating coil and wick were carefully conducted by using Analytik Jena TOPwave and Plasma Quant ICP-MS Elite.
